Thomas E. Proctor
Thomas E. Proctor was a leading New England industrialist who was instrumental in forming the United States Leather Company and lived from 1834-1894. He joined his father’s leather and tanning business at a young age. Later, he grew the business significantly, by acquiring property and tanneries in New York and Pennsylvania. In 1881, Proctor purchased the Greenwood Tannery in Bradford County, Pennsylvania.
Jonathan A. Hill
Jonathan A. Hill was a Brigadeer-General from Maine who fought in the Civil War and lived from 1831-1905. After the war, he began working with Proctor at Proctor’s tannery in Woodhull, New York. In 1890, Proctor and Hill formed a partnership in which Hill would acquire a one-third interest in Proctor’s tannery in Greenwood, Pennsylvania. Together, Proctor and Hill acquired significant acreage for their tanning operations in southern Bradford County and northern Sullivan County, Pennsylvania.
